Why does it take so long to send or receive email?

If you are noticing that it seems to take a long time to deliver or receive email, or you are being disconnected or cancel the connection because the mail transfer is slow, there are several factors that may cause this.

You may be experiencing network traffic, network problems, or line noise on your own telephone line. Further, your modem may not be set-up properly, or you may be downloading a large amount of e-mail.

If the slow transfer of email is occurring occasionally, then the problem may be that you are downloading large amounts of e-mail, or there is a network problem.

If your connections are often slow, please see the list below for actions you may take to resolve this problem:

  • If you usually cancel a slow e-mail transfer, please try not to do this as you may be downloading a very large amount of e-mail, or a very large attachment. If you cancel this transfer before it is complete, US Message will attempt to deliver the same email the next time you connect.
  • You can try another access number, or attempt to connect at a different time of day. If this step is successful, the prior access number you were using was experiencing heavy traffic.
  • It the suggestions above do not remedy the problem, perhaps your modem is not set-up properly. You can try to uninstall and then reinstall your modem. You should contact your modem manufacturer for assistance in completing this process.

How do I get my server information?

The US Message server information is as follows:

Incoming (POP3) mail server: postoffice.usmessage.net
Outgoing (SMTP) mail server: mail.usmessage.net

With my current ISP, I receive a lot of Junk Email, will I have this problem with US Message?

No. We use powerful spam filters on our servers and are constantly updating our spam database to keep your email box 99.9% Spam Free!

Will I be able to use programs such as Outlook Express, etc to read and write email?

Yes, you will still be able to use Outlook Express and other email programs to use with our service. To configure your email, follow the instructions listed on our Help Page.

Will I still be able to use my other email accounts?

Yes, you will still be able to use your other email accounts. When connected to US Message, you will need to set the Outgoing email server to ours, mail.usmessage.net. This will not affect the email in any way, it just need to pass through our servers while you are connected through our access numbers. Your incoming mail for these other accounts will not need to be changed. We are unable to filter out spam or viruses from email accounts that are not associated with US Message.

How can I check my email from other locations?

Using our web mail interface, located at http://postoffice.usmessage.net/src/login.php, you can read and write email from any computer connected to the internet, anywhere in the world.

Do I need to be connected to read and write email?

No, you can write a message offline, connect, then send the message. This will free up your phone line while you write your messages. To do so, in your email client (i.e.: Outlook Express) open the program, and choose the "Work Offline" option. When you go to send the message, you will be given the option to connect.

After writing a very long email, I get disconnected and am not able to send?

Our service is equipped with a 10 minute idle timeout which will log you off after 10 minutes of inactivity. While you are writing a very long email, no data is being sent or received, so our servers see this as idle time. To prevent this, you can either write the message while offline or you can keep a random website open and refresh the page every so often to maintain an active connection.

What is the maximum size attachment I can send?

There is a 5MB maximum limit on the size of the attachment you can send. The typical attachment is much less than that.

What is the limit on the amount of messages I can have in my mailbox?

Your mailbox is limited to 10MB of storage space. However, if you use a program such as Outlook Express which downloads messages to your computer, rather than stay on our servers, the amount of messages you can have is only limited to the size of your hard drive.

I periodically send out emails to very large groups of people who want to receive it; can I use your service?

We are a consumer based service and do not support email messages to large groups of people.

How Do I Open A "Zipped" File?

Programs are often distributed across the Internet in a ".zip" file format which compresses the file(s) so that they are smaller & easier to send to someone. This is especially useful since many virus software programs automatically delete any e-mail attachments that are .exe executable programs. If you are having trouble sending or receiving a program by e-mail due to a virus software program then try sending the file in .zip format. You can tell if a file is "zipped" if it ends with a .zip extension on the end of the name.

There are a variety of programs that can be used to open or compress zip files. You might already have a program such as WinZip on your computer without even knowing it. Some are free and others cost money but even the purchase versions often include a free 30 day demo to evaluate the software for free. We recommend checking a website such as www.download.com or www.tucows.com for your options on the latest compression tools.

WinZip is probably the most well known program of this variety. You can download a free demo of the program at http://www.winzip.com/ddchomea.htm. >
